The hunt for the 39 clues that leads to unimaginable power takes 14 year old Amy Cahill and her 11 year old brother Dan to the Forbidden City in China. When Amy and Dan board their plane to China a movie that was filmed in China is played on a small TV screen and in the movie the Janus crest is shown on the wall of a building. So Dan sets off to find the exact same Janus crest that he saw in the movie. He searches through lots of buildings and finally finds a green faded picture the Janus crest. He climbs up to the roof and through a open window he finds a silk blanket. On the silk blanket their are five crests, the Lucian crest, the Janus crest, the Ekaterina crest, the Tomas crest and the Cahill crest. The five crests on the blanket make an equation. The equation is the Lucian crest+the Janus crest+the Ekaterina crest and the Tomas crest=the Cahill crest. While Dan retrieved the silk blanket a Chinese man yells at Dan for trying to steel the precious Chinese blanket. Before Dan's own eyes he is kidnapped by Ian Kabra, Natalie Kabra and their vicious mother Isabel Kabra. They take Dan very far away from Amy. While Dan is kidnapped he meets up with his cousin Jonah Wizard and he offers to help Dan find Amy and their au pair Nellie. Amy feels so bad so they search everywhere even the great wall of China but by mistake they drop Grace Cahill's cat Saladin down the great wall. Amy ends up finding Dan and they race up a huge mountain to search for the next clue. Amy is the first to climb the mountain and find the clue but she makes a terrible mistake she drops the clue down the side of the mountain as it shatters on the rocks below.
